ALGER, Hugh W. - Hugh W. Alger, 79, 518 Third St., Towanda, who retired 16 years ago from Mansfield State College, died Saturday, March 23 at Memorial Hospital in Towanda, He had been in ill health for some time. Mr. Alger, a son of Alfred A. and Minerva Tyrrell Alger, was born in Orwell Township, April 13, 1883. After finishing Orwell Township Schools he began teaching in the ungraded school in Windham Summit, and later in the Tyrrell Hill School in Windham. In 1902 he entered West Chester State Normal School, graduating in 1905. He also studied at Bucknell University and at Yale University where he received his Bachelor of Arts degree. Mr. Alger married Miss Bertha Perdue on July 10, 1912 and they celebrated their golden anniversary last year. Mrs. Alger survives him. Mr. Alger taught in the east until his health was impaired when he returned to his father's farm where he worked for four years. He then accepted a position at Mansfield State Normal School where he supervised student teachers for twenty-two years. During those years he attended summer sessions at Temple University and earned a Master of Science degree in education in 1928. At the close of 1945 Mr. Alger retired from teaching and purchased a home in Towanda and he and his wife have lived there ever since. He spent his time during retirement in three farming and writing. He was a member of the Methodist Church in which he was very active. He was also a member of the Mansfield Masonic Lodge and of many civic and service organizations in Towanda. Surviving in addition to Mrs. Alger, are two daughters, Mrs. Alice Gapp of Vienna, VA and Mrs. Janet Elder of Norris, Tenn.; a son, Robert of Houston, Texas; four brothers, Irving of San Francisco, Roger of Binghamton, Ferris of Rome and Donald of North Orwell; 11 grandchildren. Funeral service was held in the North Orwell Union Church on Tuesday morning at 10 o'clock with Rev. Edgar W. Sabin officiating.
