MILITARY BRANCH: Army ENLISTMENT CITY: Wilkes Barre, PA Served in WWII MILITARY ENLISTMENT: 23 Mar 1943 to1 Jan 1945 BAILEY Leonard Morrell [SRGP 34887] Age 84, of Mansfield, PA, died Friday, December 18, 2009 at Broad Acres Health and Rehabilitation Center, Wellsboro, PA. Leonard was born January 8, 1925 in Mansfield, PA a son of Ross and Mildred (Whitaker) Bailey. He was married to Shirley (Husted) Bailey. Leonard attended school in Mansfield and Wellsboro. He entered Mansfield College in 1941, left in March of 1943 to join the Army, being attached to the Air Force. He received his basic training in Atlantic City. He was later sent to Italy by way of North Africa. After discharge he returned to Mansfield College, graduating in 1947. Len had a long career in education beginning in Emporium, PA in science in 1947. While there he served as scout master, Sunday school teacher, basketball coach, and became a charter member of the new Emporium Lions Club. Receiving his Masters Degree at St. Bonaventure University, he left Emporium in 1956 to accept a position as Guidance Counselor at Booth School in Elmira, NY. Later transferred from Booth to Hendy Avenue where he served as assistant principal and counselor. One year later he moved to Broadway Junior High as principal. Retirement came on June of 1983. Many wonderful summers were spent at Camp Red Cloud, Plattsburg, NY where Len was a Head Camp Craft Counselor for several years. Len is survived by his wife, Shirley; son, Mark D. Bailey of Tioga, wife Lori, grandchildren, Adam and Tiffany. He was predeceased by a son, Steven, parents, Ross and Mildred Bailey, and a brother, Lawrence. Private funeral services will be held with family and friends at Buckheit Funeral Chapel, Crematory & Monuments, PC, 637 S. Main St., Mansfield, PA with Rev. Allen Hulslander officiating. Donations may be made in Len's memory to the Calvary United Methodist Church, P. O. Box 237, Lawrenceville, PA 16929. Published in Star-Gazette on December 20, 2009 |
