W. Albert Bates, 74, Died Sunday Morning W.Albert Bates, 74, for many years prominently connected with the business life of Mansfield, died early Sunday Morning, June 11, 1950, at his home on North Main Street, following an extended illness. A son of Albert and Elizabeth Lincoln Bates, he was born at Mansfield January 6, 1876. He attended local public schools and graduated from Philadelphia School of Pharmacy, becoming a registered pharmacist in 1902. For many years he was associated in the Bates Pharmacy with his brother, John P. Bates, and sister, Dr. Mary Lincoln Gould. Following their death he continued the business until 1931, when he sold to Harold Terry. For some years he conducted a photograph studio and insurance agency. September 15, 1902, Mr. Bates married Miss Helen Leach, of Chinchilla, Pa., who died in 1938. A daughter Margaret, born in 1906, lived only a few days. Mr. Bates was a member of the Presbyterian Church, a former elder and superintendent of the Sunday School, a past Noble Grand of Mansfield Lodge 526 I.O.O.F, a past Master of Friendship Lodge, F&AM,a member of Zebulun Chapter of Mansfield; Williamsport Consistory and Irem Temple Shrine of Wilkes Barre. Deeply interested in the welfare of the community, Mr. Bates had active in various civic organizations through the years. Surviving are nieces, Mrs. Elizabeth Bates Smith, of Lansdown; Mrs. Sara Bates Randall, of Lindley, N.Y.; Mrs. Hattie Leach, of Chinchilla, and Mrs. Sarah Adams, of Montrose; one nephew, Newton Lincoln, of Lyons, N.Y., and one cousin, Mrs. Stella Ely, of Mansfield. Funeral services were held Tuesdayat 3 p.m. at the Shaw & Robena Funeral Home, the Rev. John Ross Hays officiating. Burial was in Prospect Cemetery. Friendship Lodge conducted commital services. |
