BEARDSLEE - SHIRLEY B. SMITH (SRGP 00578) Shirley B. Smith, 69, wife of Roland J. Smith of RD 2, Mansfield, died Saturday, June 15, 1991 at home, following a lengthy illness. Born June 6, 1922 she was a daughter of Henry and Caroline McConnell Beardslee. She was a long-time member of Elk Run United Methodist Church, but was currently a member of Roseville United Methodist Church. She was a member of East Sullivan Grange. She was formerly employed by North Penn Health Center. She and her husband observed their 51st wedding anniversary recently. Surviving besides her husband, are three sons, J. Harlo Smith of Lititz, Lyman Smith of Fort Washington, Md., and Wendell J. Smith of North Syracuse, NY; two daughters, Clarice A. Shirks of Lancaster, Rhonda J. Hamilton of Shiremanstown; a brother, Frank Beardslee of Troy, and five grandchildren. Friends called Monday, June 17, at the Scureman Funeral Home, Mansfield. The funeral service was held Tuesday, June 18, at the Roseville United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Robert Stump, her pastor, officiating. Burial was in Watson Cemetery, Roseville. BEARDSLEE—SMITH WEDDING Miss Shirley Beardslee, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Beardslee, and Roland Smith, son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Emerson Smith, were married June 1, at 2 p.m. in the Methodist Church at Elk Run. The ceremony was performed by the Rev. Carl McConnell, of Geneva, N.Y., uncle of the bride, assisted by the Rev. Homer Cole, pastor of the church. Mrs. Betty Beardslee, sister of the bride, was matron of honor, and Gilbert Furman of Millerton, was best man. Miss Kathleen Frazier was flower girl. The wedding music was played by Miss Jean McConnell, of Ithaca. A reception at the summer home of the bride’s uncle, J. A. McConnell, followed the ceremony, after which Mr. and Mrs. Smith left for a motor trip to Atlantic City and the World’s Fair. Both Mr. and Mrs. Smith are graduates of the Mansfield High School. They will reside on a farm near Roseville. (Handwritten date 1940) Shirley lived fifty years on Sanitarium Hill in the house where she was born. She attended Elk Run School for eight years and graduated from Mansfield Senior High School in 1940. She was an active member of the Elk Run Methodist Church serving as President of the W.S.C.S. She was a member of the East Sullivan Grange. She was an important part of Joan Nash's life for all her life. After moving to Roseville, she worked as a home health aid. She worked until she was suffering too badly from cancer to continue. She died of cancer at home in Roseville. |
