BERGUSON, Walter B. [SRGP 90424] - Walter B. Berguson, 81, of Mansfield RR 1, formerly of Blossburg, died Monday, Nov. 2, 1998, at home. Born Aug. 25, 1917, in Arnot, he was the son of John and Edith Johnson Berguson. He attended the Arnot School for 11 years and graduated from Mansfield High School in 1935. He worked in the mines for three years and retired from the former W&K Foundry, Blossburg, in 1965, after 28 years of service. A dairy farmer for the last 45 years on the family farm, Berguson Dairy Farm, Mansfield, he served as a director for the Dairy Herd Improvement Association and the Agriculture Stabilization Conservation Services. He was community director of the Pennsylvania Farmers Association. A veteran of World War II, he served in the Second Armored Division and was in active service from North Africa to Berlin. He drove a tank and participated in sic major battles in Sicily, Normandy, Northern France, the Battle of the Bulge, Rhineland and Central Europe. He was awarded the Belgian Fourraguere, the Purple Heart, six Battle Stars, and one Bronze Arrowhead. He married his wife of 52 years, the former Iris L. Strong, on Sept. 27, 1946, in Blossburg. He was a lifetime member of the Gethsemane Lutheran Church, Arnot, and served on its council. He was a member of the Blossburg Lodge F&AM, #350, the Arnot Cemetery Association, the Tioga County Historical Society, and a charter member of the Arnot Sportsman's Club. He belonged to the Blossburg American Legion, William B. Wilson Post 572, the Mansfield VFW Post #6757, and was a lifetime member of the Hillside Rod and Gun Club, Blossburg. He was a charter member of the Tioga County Sports Hall of Fame board of directors. In 1997, he was inducted into the Sports Hall of Fame for baseball. He enjoyed hunting and sports, especially baseball and bowling. Preceding him in death were his sister, Agnes Kendrick and his brother, Harold C. Berguson. Surviving besides his wife are two sons and daughter-in-law, Dr. Paul D. Berguson of Sugarloaf and Bruce W. and Peggy Berguson of Mansfield; one daughter and son-in-law, Deidre and John Jago of Sugarloaf; five grandsons; one granddaughter; four brothers, Gordon of Blossburg, John R. of Covington, Donald of Wellsboro and Robert of Arnot; two sisters, Ethel Thompson of Morris and Bertha Young of Herkimer, NY; and several nieces and nephews. Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Zwicharowski Funeral Home, 314 Granger St., Blossburg, on Wednesday, Nov. 4. Funeral services will be held there Thursday, Nov. 5, at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Gregory Hinton, pastor of St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Wellsboro and Rev. John Whitfield, pastor of the First Baptist Church of Mansfield, officiating. Burial with full military honors will be made at Arnot Cemetery. The family will provide the flowers.
