Born in Roaring Branch, PA, she was a daughter of the late John Prout Brainard and Mary Gorsline Brainard. She attended Roaring Branch schools and graduated from Mansfield State Teachers College. She lived in New York, Florida and North Carolina before moving the Pawleys Island in 1984. She taught high school English and French. She was a member and past grand matron of the Phoenix Chapter 15, Order of the Eastern Star in Smethport, PA, and a communicant of All Saints, Waccamaw, Episcopal Church at Pawleys Island. She was the widow of Robert Foote Brownell. Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. William G. Graves II of Pawleys Island; a son, Robert F. Brownell Jr. of Barnstead, NH; seven grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. A graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Rose Hill Cemetery in Smethport, PA. Officiating will be the Rev. Father Mark Giroux. Burial will follow under the direction of the Gary K. Drum Funeral Home Inc. of Smethport, PA.
