Cass, George Willard- George W. Cass, 75, retired Mansfield State Teachers College instructor died Friday, Oct. 8, 1954, following an extended illness. Mr. Cass was born May 11, 1879 at Nelson, Penna. The son of Marion Francis Cass and Susan Maria Baxter Cass. He attended the Nelson Graded School and in the fall of 1890, the family moved to Elkland, Pa., Geroge W. Cass was graduated from the Elkland High School in 1895, took post gradute work the following year and taught District School one year in Farmington Twp. In September 1899, he entered the Mansfield State Normal School and he took the college preparatory course. In September 1901 he entered Dickinson College, Carlisle, Pa., where he took the classical course and was graduated in 1905 with an A.B. degree. During his college career he was awarded Chemistry and Physics prizes. He was graduated with valedictory rank and initiated into the Dickinson Chapter of Phi Beta Kappa. From 1905 to 1907 he was head of Latin Language and Literature at Union College, Barbourville, Kentucky. In 1907 he became a member of the faculty of Mansfield State Normal School. In 1908 he received his M.A. degree from Dickinson College. In 1924 he attended the summer session of Harvard University. He was a pioneer in Pennsylvania in the development of the sociology course. During his 34 year tenure the Normal School became a Teachers College. He spent several summers traveling as field representative for the college. He retired from active work in 1941. On August 9, 1906 he married J.Floy Sherwood of Mansfield, who died in 1910. In 1913 his mother came to live with him and he purchased the house at 96 Saint James St., where he resided until 1953. His mother died in 1931, his father having died in 1908. For a number of years he was active in Masonry, being Past Master of Friendship Lodge No. 247, Past High Priest of Zebulun Chapter 296,Royal Arch Masons, Past Commander Tiadaghton Commandery, Wellsboro, and Past Thrice Potent Master of Coudersport Consistory. He was an elder in the Presbyterian Church for 39 years in Mansfield, having joined December 8, 1907. He was a life member of both the Penna. State Education Association and of the Dickinson College Alumni Assn. He was also a member of the Grange for over 25 year. He is survived by a sister, Mrs. Eva Cass Jahn of Redlands, Calif; a ward, Mrs.Janice Madigan Kennedy of Troy. Funeral was held Sunday at Shaw and Robena Funeral Home, the Rev. John R. Hays officiating. Burial was in Prospect Cemetery. Masonic committal service was held at the grave. |
