Edwin S. Coles Dies: Edwin S. Coles, for many years editor and publisher of the Mansfield Advertiser, died at Princeton, N.J., January 31, 1970 at the age of 88. Mr. Coles was a former mayor of Mansfield and a past president of the Alumni Association of Mansfield State College, retiring from that position in 1957. Funeral services were held at St. James Episcopal Church in Mansfield, Tuesday at 11:00 A.M. Burial was in Prospect Cemetery. The Rev. George E. Booth officiated. Mr. Coles was a vestryman and lay reader in St. James Church for many years. Surviving are a son, Dr. James Stacy Coles, New York City; daughter, Mrs. Kees Bol, Princeton, N.J.; sister, Mrs. B. W. Leonard and brother, Percy A. Coles, both of Mansfield and seven grandchildren. He was a son of Sheridan and Nora Stacy Coles and lived most of his younger years in Mansfield. Mr. Coles attended Mansfield schools and graduated from Mansfield State College in the class of 1900. He went to England in 1903 and then went west where he became Vice President of the Wheatlands Publishing Co. and Editor of the Laramie County Times at Wheatland, Wyoming. He returned to Mansfield in 1906 to take over the Mansfield Advertiser from his father in 1907. He gradually retired from the business after selling a partnership to Chester P. Bailey in 1949. He had over 50 years in the publishing business. He continued to write his famous "Round Robin" column until 1969. Mr. Coles was married in 1912 to the former Viva Rose, who preceded him in death. Mr. Coles served as mayor of Mansfield from 1922 to 1936 and held many other prominent civic and fraternal positions. |
