[Retan 1957]Another drug store with a continuous history, but not location, is the Coles Drug Store at 2 South Main Street. In the seventies Ridgway and Cole had a drug store at approximately 17 N. Main Street. In 1874 they moved to the, at that time, new Bank Block, 6 E. Wellsboro Street, and continued in business until 1890 when they sold to Stevenson and Burnham, and in 1892 Burnham became sole owner. In 1902, at his death it was sold to Whitman, who sold to Passmore in 1905. In 1909 Percy Coles bought the business and in 1924 moved to S. Main Street. PERCY A. COLES: Percy A. Coles, age 88, of Mansfield died early Wednesday, March 15, 1972 at his home on East Wellsboro Street. Mr. Coles had been a prominent businessman in Mansfield for many years. He was a member of the Baptist Church, a retired druggist and President of First Citizens National Bank. He is survived by his son and wife, Mr. and Mrs. Richard Coles of Rochester, N.H. and their daughter Miss Mary Linda Coles of Boston, Mass.; and his sister Mrs. (Inez Coles) B. W. Leonard, Sr., of Mansfield. Funeral services were held at the Mansfield Baptist Church, Friday at 2:00 p.m., the Rev. Benjamin Nevin officiating. Burial was in Prospect Cemetery, Mansfield. Memorial contributions may be made to the Percy A. Coles Memorial Fund of the First Baptist Church. [no heading; scanned near end of Percy A. Coles obituary clipping] Mr. Coles was born Sept. 14, 1883, a son of Sheridon E. and Nora Stacy Coles. He attended Mansfield Schools and graduated from Mansfield Normal School in 1902 and from the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy in 1907. Coles, 78, has been named president of the First National Bank, of Mansfield. He succeeds Ralph S. Taylor, who died recently. The bank's board of directors this week also named Ralph H. Benson, 60, a director to fill another vacancy. Coles was born in Mansfield and received his early schooling there. He was graduated from the former Mansfield State Normal School in 1902 and from the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy and Science in 1907. Coles served as a pharmacist at Williamsport, Philadelphia, Johnstown and Warren before returning to Mansfield where he purchased a drug store in 1909. This August he will observe his 53rd anniversary at Coles Pharmacy. He is a member of the Pennsylvania Pharmaceutical Association, the First Baptist Church, the Mansfield Chamber of Commerce and Friendly Lodge, F&AM, of Mansfield. He is a former president of the board of trustees of Mansfield State College. He has been a director of the First National Bank for about 10 years. He is married to the former Miss Pearl Pearl L. Lauderbach. They have one son, Richard F. Coles, manager of the General Electric plants at Toledo, Ohio, and Fort Wayne, Ind. and a granddaughter. |
