CRIPPEN, CECIL (SRGP 8024) KILLED IN AUTO ACCIDENT Cecil Crippen, popular young Mansfield man was fatally injured this morning about one o’clock when his car was wrecked on the Millerton road. The accident happened at a curve near the W. N. Smith farm about a mile west of Millerton when Mr. Crippen and Gerald Baarnes were returning from Elmira where they had been attending a radio school. When near the Smith farm the car suddenly swerved off the road and when Mr. Crippen, who was driving, tried to turn it back, it crashed into a tree, throwing both men out. Mr. Crippen was thrown about ten feet from the car and his skull was fractured. He lived only a few minutes. Mr. Barnes was thrown about twenty feet from the car and was unconscious when picked up. Dr. Hughes Meaker, of Mansfield was called and Mr. Barnes was taken to his home here, where he is reported to be suffering from shock and bruises. Corporal Thomas Betzko, of the Highway Patrol Sub-station in Mansfield, investigated the accident and reported to Coroner William White, of Wellsboro, who decided that an inquest was not necessary. Mr. Crippen’s body was removed to the Shaw undertaking rooms in Mansfield. Mr. Crippen was the son of Augustus and Grace Hall Crippen and was born in Rutland 23 years ago. He graduated from the Mansfield Senior High School in 1928 and from Elmira Business Institute in 1930. Soon after graduation he entered the employ of the Taylor Hardware Company as book-keeper, which position he has since held. Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Alice Seymour Crippen, a son Richard; his mother, Mrs. Grace Crippen, and two brothers, Alton and Rex, all of Roseville. Funeral services will be held Friday at 1 p.m. at the home in Roseville, and 2 o’clock at the Roseville church, Dr. Chester A. Feig, of Mansfield officiating; interment in the Watson cemetery. |
