CUNNINGHAM, Stephen J. - Steve Cunningham Killed in Crash - U.S. Coast Guard Seaman Stephen J. Cunningham, 23, of 56 Seventh St., was killed Tuesday morning in a one-car accident on the Jones Falls Expressway near Baltimore, MD. His parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Cunningham of the Mansfield address, received word of the fatality Tuesday afternoon from Chief Petty Officer Frank B. Carlson of Wilkes-Barre. Carlson said Seaman Cunningham was killed when the car he was driving flipped over after striking the median strip on the expressway. Complete details of the mishap were not immediately available, Carlson said. Seaman Cunningham was a 1962 graduate of Mansfield Senior High School. He enlisted in the Coast Guard in November 1962. He re-enlisted and was serving aboard the Coast Guard vessel, Sebago, which was in dry-dock at Baltimore. The ship just returned from patrol near Newfoundland, his parents said. Seaman Cunningham had served as honor guard at the White House for one year and was honor guard during the funeral of the late President John F. Kennedy. Besides his parents he is survived by five brothers and two sisters. - Mansfield Advertiser, October 11, 1967 |
