Funeral on Saturday at 8 a.m. from the Joseph F. Horan Funeral Home, 432 Hamilton Ave., Trenton, NJ. Mass of Christian Burial at Our Lady of Good Counsel R.C. Church in West Trenton, NJ. Interment in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Trenton, NJ. Helen Dietsche, 81, commended U.S. Army nurse Retired Army Maj. Helen F. Dietsche, 81, of Somers Point, died Monday at Chandler Hall Hospice Unit in Newtown, PA. She was an officer in the U.S. Army Nursing Corps, earning the rank of major in 1957. After more than 25 years of military service, Maj. Dietsche retired from the U.S. Army in June 1963. She was proud of a personal letter she received from the then U.S. Surgeon General Leonard D. Heaton, upon her retirement, commending her for her many years of service and "the excellent manner in which you performed your duties with the Army Medical Service." Maj. Dietsche was a member of the Retired Officers Association of the United States. She was called to active duty as an ensign in the U.S. Navy in January of 1943 and reported to the Norfolk Naval Hospital in Norfolk, NA. She completed her tour of duty in the U.S. Navy and then transferred to the U.S. Army Nursing Corps in 1945. Maj. Dietsche completed Army Nurses Training at Camp Swift, Texas, studied advanced nursing procedures courses at Catholic University in Washington, DC, completed nursing management in Walter Reade Army Hospital in Washington and finished the Nursing Instructors program, also at Walter Reade Hospital. Born in Sangerfield, NY, she was educated in Utica, NY, and eared her bachelor’s degree from the State University at Mansfield, PA. She received her nurses training at Battle Creek Sanitarium in Battle Creek, Mich. She lived in Somers Point for the past 31 years and briefly resided in Ewing Township. She is survived by her sister, Louise Gallagher of Ewing Township. Services will be held 8 a.m. Saturday at the Joseph P. Horan Funeral Home, 432 Hamilton Ave., Trenton, where friends may call from 3-5 and 6-8 p.m. Friday. A Mass of Christina Burial will be celebrated 9 a.m. Saturday at Our Lady of Good Counsel Roman Catholic Church, West Trenton.
