The following writtn by Geore E. Dyer in his 1974 family history. Neal Emerson Dyer B. Oct. 31,1906 at Ainsworth, Neb. M. Aug. 22, 1933 to Sara Marguerite White at Philadelphia, Pa. D. Jan. 10,1964 at Pennsauken, N.J. Attended Knoxville and Mansfield, Pa. schools. Was manager of the Mansfield High School basketball team and played saxophone in the school band. At 12 years of age he started his newspaper career by working at the Mansfield Advertiser, a weekly newspaper. Was graduated from Mansfield State Teachers College in 1927. While there was editor-in-chief of Carontowan, the college year book and publication manager of the Flashlight, the college weekly newspaper. Summers he worked as linotype operator for the Grit in Williamsport, Pa. Entered Temple University, Philadelphia, Pa., in 1927. As an undergraduate he had the unique distinction of being name Associate Editor of Pennsylvania University's Daily Pennsylvanian and the Bennett News. His name appeared on the Mastheads of these Publications and he was awarded gold keys by the newspapers. As a sophomore at Temple he won first prize in a short story contest open to 10,000 students. Was vice president and then president of the Fourth Estate Club of Temple, first president of the Press Club, and associate editor of the Templar, the University annual. Was a charter member and first president of Sigma Delta Chi, national journalistic organization. Was a member of Delta Sigma Pi, a campus fraternity. After graduation he affiliated with the Philadelphia Record, a daily newspaper, and in 1933 became general manager, a title later changed to business manager. When the property was purchased by Gannett Co., Inc. he became an officer of the Southern New Jersey Newspapers. Was officer, director and consultant with Edmund Goodrich Associates, a newspaper consulting firm. Came to the Camden (N.J.) Courier-Post in 1945 on special assignment as business manager by the then president of the newspaper, J. David Stern. For three years was president of the mechanical department of the New Jersey Press Association, and a member of its Board of Directors. Served as a member of the Panel of Experts which weekly provided answers to newspaper problems submitted by publishers to the Editor and Publisher magazine. Was a Rotarian, president of Camden County Safety Council, member of the Board of Trustees and finance committee of Malvern Institute for Scientific Research, was officer and director of Emsco Inc., a real estate holding company, and Hampton-Leader Co. Inc., photo engravers. Retired Jan. 1, 1964 and died ten days later. Sarah (Sally) Marguerite White Dyer B. July 1, 1911 at Wilkesbarre, Pa. Children Sarah , Neal Jr., Patricia and Thomas. |
