DYER - George E. Dyer, 83, of 60 Elmira St., Mansfield died Saturday, Oct. 6, 1984 in Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Hospital, Wellsboro. Born April 9, 1901, at Ainsworth, Neb., he was a son of Edward and Stella Dyer. He was a member of the Knoxville Baptist Church. Mr. Dyer was a life member of the Mansfield Hose Co. He was a 50-year member of Friendship Lodge 247, F&AM, and Zebulum Royal Arch Chapter 296, Mansfield. He also was a former high priest of the chapter. Surviving are: his wife, Agnes McCausland Dyer of Wells & Goodall Trailer Court, Mansfield; stepson, H. Douglas Dart of Mansfield; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; nephew, Neal Dyer of Arlington, Va.; nieces Patricia Dyer of Del. and Sally Pedroza of Chicago, Ill., several grand nieces and nephews.The funeral was held at 10:30 a.m. today, Wednesday, Oct. 10 at the Scureman funeral Home, Mansfield with the Rev. Benjamin E. Nevin, pastor of the First Baptist Church officiating. Burial was in Prospect Cemetery, Mansfield. Friends were invited to call at the funeral home from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 9. A Masonic service was held at 8:30 p.m. the family provided the flowers. Donations may be made to First Baptist Church of Mansfield or Tioga county Historical Society, Wellsboro or Mansfield Ambulance Association. - Wellsboro Gazette, 10 October 1984 The following is written by George in his 1974 family history. George Edward Dyer B. April 9,1901 at Ainsworth, Neb. M April 25, 1929 to Ruth Helen Thompson Dartt at Rochester, N.Y. Attended school in Ainsworth , Academy Corners, Pa. one-room school for one year, Knoxville, Pa. and graduated from Mansfield, Pa. high School. When only seven he delivered newspapers in Pluma, S.D. for a few weeks before his father's death. Sold the Saturday Evening Post in Knoxville and cared for Texas mustang while the owner was in college. When the family moved to Mansfield, the others went by train but, following in the footsteps of his pioneer forefathers, the 14-year-old lad mounted the pony and made his way through absolutely strange country to Mansfield to deliver the mustang to a new owner. Was one of the earliest Boy Scouts having joined a local troop in 1913, one year after the founding of BSA. Played football and basketball at Mansfield High and played in the first statewide basketball playoff at State College, Pa. in 1920. Took care of furnaces at the Ely business block and the Baptist Church while in high school as well as clerking in a shoe store. During the summers he worked at a toy factory, a milk plant and finally for an electric company. When Blossburg and Mansfield electric companies were sold the purchasing firm extended its lines to Tioga, Pa. and George was placed in charge of the house wiring workmen at Tioga and Lawrenceville. Established his own electric contracting company in 1923 and ran and expanded it until Jan 1, 1969 when he retired. Was Noble Grand of IOOF No. 526, Master of Friendship Lodge, No. 247, F&AM, and High Priest of Zebilum Chapter No. 296. Was Republican Committeeman in Mansfield for 24 years and was a member of the Smythe Park Board of Directors for 26 years, serving as president for the last four years. Was president of the Southern Tier Kennel Club for two terms and served on the Blossburg, Pa., Hospital Board of Directors. Is a member of the Mansfield Baptist Church. In 1932 George and Ruth visited his Uncle Merrill and Aunt Nellie Wright at Morse Lodge, Cedaredge, Colo. He had not seen them since 1909. The also visited Ainsworth. Address-George E.
