Eugene Claude, "Gene", Hilfiger was born on April 7, 1923 in Mainesburg, PA, a son of the late Maude Hilfiger Lawrence. After graduating from Mansfield High School, Gene proudly served our country in the Asiatic Pacific campaign during WWII with the U.S. Army's 675th Field Artillery Battalion 11th Airborne Division. He spent time in the Canton, PA area, frequenting sporting events and hanging out with the Davis & Leggett Garage gang. He was employed by the Pittsburgh Electrician's Union Local No. 5 until retiring. They then lived in Troy, PA for several years, enjoying wonderful times shared with family and friends. Gene's family was most important in his life. He cherished his grandchildren. A true "people person," Gene enjoyed his life. He loved playing a good game of cards and will be remembered as quite the character at times. He was well known around Troy, along with his red scooter, especially at the bowling alley's coffee shop. After his stroke in 1992, Gene kept his kindness and dignity, never complaining about surviving with his difficulties and falls. The family would like to thank the staffs of St. Joseph's Hospital and Appleridge, also Dr. Devlin for all their support and compassion.
