Aug. 2, 2022 Born on June 15, 1932 in Mansfield, PA she was daughter of the late, Morgan & Hazel (Fish) Hilfiger. Lois married the love of her life, Fred Shappee on July 10, 1986 in Webb Mills, NY. Together, they shared 24 years of wedded bliss until his passing on May 9, 2011. Lois was employed for many years as a teacher's aide for the Pine City Elementary School. She was a longtime member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Elmira. Her favorite hobbies included flower gardening, the NY Yankees, Little League Baseball and traveling. She also loved spending time with her children, baking, entertaining, and her beloved cats. Lois was famous for her home baked apple pies. She is survived by her loving children, Teena (Ben) Carr, TN; Terry (Kim) Brewer, PA; sisters-in-law, Faye Hilfiger, Sue Hilfiger, nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and husband, Lois was predeceased by her brothers, Morgan (Verna) Hilfiger Jr., Duane (Margaret) Hilfiger, and Norman Hilfiger. A funeral service will take place at Caywood's Funeral Home & Gardens, 1126 Broadway, Southport/Elmira, NY 14904 on Wed. Aug. 10, 2022 at 12 (noon). Born on October 24, 1919, in Southport, Fred was the son of the late, Arthur & Daisy Tillinghast Shappee. Fred grew up learning the value of hard work. He was the proprietor of Shappee's Meat Plant and co proprietor of Pine City Meat Market. He was a member of the Pine City Baptist Church, Pine City Vol. Fire Dept., and Fur, Fin & Feather Sportsman's Club where he enjoyed special times with friends. Fred was an avid sports fan who enjoyed the NY Yankees, Penn State football, and Syracuse University football and basketball. He played Big ball on the Pine City Team, coached and umpired Little League. In honor of his wishes all services were handled privately at his family's convenience and he was interred in Fitzsimmons Cemetery. Memorial donations may be directed to Fur, Fin & Feather Sportsman Club, PO Box 323, Elmira, NY 14902 in Fred's memory. – Elmira Star-Gazette, NY, 15 May 2011,Sunday, p.17 Mansfield Advertiser, PA, 25 April 1951, Wednesday, p.1 Wed in Pretty Ceremony In a pretty ceremony performed Sunday, April 15, 1951, at 2 p.m. in the Gray Valley Church, Miss Lois June Hilfiger, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Morgan Hilfiger, of Mainesburg, became the bride of Wilfred Brewer, son of Mr. & Mrs. Fred Brewer, of Gillett. The double ring ceremony was performed by the Rev. Glenn Dewey before an altar which was decorated with baskets of daffodils, blue iris and white snapdragons. Mrs. Merle Hilfiger, of Troy, an aunt of the bride, played traditional wedding music and accompanied Miss Dena Smith, a classmate of the bride, who sang "Always" and "I Love You, Truly." Given in marriage by her father, the bride wore a white satin gown with train, styled with long sleeves ending in points over the hands, sweetheart neckline edged with lace which trimmed the front of the dress and formed a peplum in the back. Her fingertip illusion veil fell from a seed pearl headdress and she carried a cascade bouquet of white starlight roses. Miss Joan Wilcox, of Mansfield, a classmate of the bride, was maid of honor. She wore a brocaded blue satin gown with round neckline and wide bertha collar and carried a colonial bouquet of yellow roses and sweet peas. Flower girls, Carol Brewer, niece of the bridegroom, wore a floor length gown of pink organdy and carried a basket of mixed flowers. Bradley Brewer, of Millerton, was best man for his brother. Ushers were Morgan Hilfiger, Jr., brother of the bride, and Burdett Brewer, brother of the bridegroom. A reception for 40 guests was held at the home of the bride’s parents. When the couple left for a wedding trip the bride wore a gray suit with white and navy accessories and white rose corsage. The bride is a graduate of Mansfield Senior High School, 1950, and has been employed in Sours Variety Store. Mr. Brewer attended the Troy High School. He is associated in farming with his father. They are residing in Gillett. |
