JONES, Alfred – Alfred Jones, 46, of 99 Main St., Mansfield, was killed instantly at 9:03 a.m. Sunday when the tractor trailer he was driving crashed into a tree in Jersey Shore. Jersey Shore police said the rig went off the right side of the highway and struck a large tree on Railroad St. inside the city limits on Route 220. Jones, a driver for the Johnson Truck Lines, Mansfield, was reported to have left the Mansfield terminal at 4 a.m. for Mill Hall and was returning to Wellsboro with a tank-trailer of milk when the accident occurred. Dr. Earl Miller of Williamsport, Lycoming County coroner, said Jones died instantly of brain damage resulting from a compound skull fracture. Frank Nugent, supervisor of maintenance for the Johnson Lines, said "Jones has driven for the company for about 30 years and had an excellent record." Jones has been a member of the Mansfield Fire Department for 30 years and chief since 1948. He was secretary of the Tioga County Firemen’s Association since it was formed 10 years ago. Robert Miller of Mansfield, president of the Tioga County Firemen’s Association said, "All proceeds from the Firemen’s Carnival July 4 and from special collection boxes placed at all entrances to Symthe Park will be used for an Al Jones Memorial." Funeral was at Shaw & Robena Funeral Home Wednesday, July 6, 1966 at 1 p.m. Burial was in Prospect Cemetery. Survived by wife, Delia Welch Jones; sons, Robert Jones of the US Navy and Rick Jones at home; daughters, Mrs. Carol Edkin of Mansfield, RD 3; father, John H. Jones of Keeneyville; sister, Mrs. Esther Prsybyszewski; two grandchildren. He was a member of the Mansfield Baptist Church. Mr. Jones drove truck for Johnson’s Trucking Inc. for over 30 years; he was past president of the Ambulance Association and active in all of Tioga Counties fire activities; he was a member of the Mansfield Baptist Church.
