KING - Mr. Mart King, [31025] aged 86 years, died last week Tuesday at his home in Mansfield. He was born in Cambridge, now White Creek, Washington county, NY April 18, 1824. In 1845 he removed, with his father, George W. King, a veteran of the war of 1812, to Mansfield. In 1852, Mr. King became a conductor on the Tioga railroad, in which capacity he served until 1858. He then engaged in the produce business in the old depot, which he continued for ten years. In 1869 he built a furniture factory northwest of the depot in Mansfield. He had just started the business when, on December 24, 1870, the factory was burned. This was a severe blow to Mr. King financially, but the following spring he commenced rebuilding, but not on so a large a scale. Later he built a steam laundry in connection with his furniture factory and he did a large business for many years. A fire on January 4, 1884, destroyed his second factory and laundry and he never rebuilt. As a public servant, he served five terms as Burgess of Mansfield borough, five years as Justice of the Peace, 21 years as School Director, 24 years as Trustee of the State Normal School, and was active in the organization of the Smythe Park Association. He was its first president and for many years served as either president or secretary. He was a 32nd degree Mason, and an active member of St. James Episcopal church of Mansfield. His widow, who was Miss Vesta Bailey, one daughter, Katherine Edna, and two grandchildren survive him. The funeral was held Friday; interment in Prospect cemetery, Mansfield. - Wellsboro Agitator, January 1, 1911 Mart King’s Furniture Factory was built in 1869, on the west side of the railroad, northwest from the depot, by Matt King. It was first devoted to the manufacture of bedsteads. On December 24,1870, it was destroyed by fire, rebuilt in the following spring, and general line of furniture manufactured. July 4, 1884, it was again destroyed by fire, but was not rebuilt. At this time Mr. King was operating, in connection with it, a steam laundry, which was doing a large business. [1897 history] |
