KNOWLTON, William D. [SRGP 27496] - William D. Knowlton, 79, of Annapolis, and formerly of Hamilton, N.Y., died March 14, 1992, at the Manatee Memorial Hospital in Bradenton, Fla., following a brief illness. Born Aug. 8, 1912, in Liverpool, N.Y., he was the son of the late John Dean and Christine Kapp Knowlton. He was the husband of the late Kathryn L. Dildine, whom he married Oct. 10, 1936 in Orangeville, Pa., and who died April 24,1983. Mr. Knowlton married the former Mary Mattingly Spates on Aug 18,1988, in Hamilton, N.Y. Mr. Knowlton graduated from Mansfield State Teacher's College in 1934, attended Penn State and Syracuse University, where he received his master's degree in 1947 He taught public school music in Pennsylvania and Morris, N.Y and moved to Hamilton in 1947, where he became the director of music at Hamilton Central School until his retirement in 1971. He was a member of the Park United Methodist Church of Hamilton, where he served as Sunday school superintendent, choir director and on the administrative board. He also was a member of the F&AM Lodge 120 of Hamilton, and was an exempt member of the Fountain Fire Company No. 1 of Hamilton. Mr. Knowlton was a member of the Hamilton Lions Club, the Hamilton Club, Madison County Retired Teacher's Association, New York State Retired Teacher's Association and the Piano Technician Guild. He is survived by his wife, Mary Knowlton of Annapolis; two daughters, Jane Loop of Hubbardsville, N.Y., and Ann Gingras of Birch Run, Mich. ; one son, Dr. John Knowlton of California; a sister, Betty Young of Winter Haven, Fla.; seven grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter. The Hamilton Masonic Lodge will conduct a masonic service at 8 p.m. on March 19. Services will be held March 20 at 11 a.m. at the Park United Methodist Church in Hamilton. Rev. Donald Rush, pastor of the church, will officiate. Memorial contributions may be made to the music department of Hamilton Central High School.
