DEAN HERBERT MANSER DIES UNEXPECTEDLY-Herbert E. Manser, dean of Instruction at Mansfield State Teachers College, died unexpectedly early Saturday morning at the Blossburg Hospital. He was 63. Dean Manser became ill at about 2 a.m. and summoned his wife who in turn called a physician. Death followed later in the morning at the Blossburg Hospital. Mr. Manser had been on the college faculty since 1922. A native of New Jersey, he received much of his early education in France, where he was secretary of the YMCA during World War I. He received his A.B. and M.A. degrees from Columbia University and became instructor of French at MSTC in 1922.In 1946, Mr. Manser was made Dean of Instruction, the position he held at the time of his death. He was a member of Friendship Lodge, F & AM of Mansfield; Williamsport Consistory and a member of Austin-Cox Post, American Legion. He also was a member of Kappa Delta Pi and Phi Mu Alpha honorary fraternities and various professional groups. Survived by his wife, Mrs. Agnes McCausland Manser; daughter, Hope C. Manser both at home; brothers, Bayard of Union, N.J., Clifford of Madison, N.J., Kenneth of Newark, N.J., and Elwood of Atlantic highlands, N.J.; sister, Mrs. Marjorie McCabe of DeLand, Fla. Masonic services were held at the Shaw and Robena Funeral Home Sunday evening at 8 p.m. and funeral there Monday at 2 p.m. The Rev. John R. Hays officiated and the Rev. D.J. Griffiths offered the prayer. Fred A. Jupenlaz, past District Chaplain, of the American Legion, offered prayer at the grave. Burial was in Oakwood Cemetery, Mansfield. Active pall bearers were: President James G. Morgan, Kimble G. Marvin, Bertram Francis, Harold G. Strait, District Deputy Grand Master of Masons, Leon Lunn, and Dr. Richard Wilson. Honorary bearers were: Ralph S. Taylor, Fred A. Jupenlaz, Dr. J.J.McMillen, Samuel M. Long, Dr. Clarence Hunsicker, Dr. Clarence Mutchler, Leonard K. Beyer, Marion E. Decker, John Cure, and John F. Myers. Mansfield State Teachers College closed Tuesday in tribute to Dean Manser. |
