JAMES A. McCONNELL (SRGP 02236) James A. McConnell, a Mansfield native and an assistant secretary of agriculture in the Eisenhower Administration, died Sunday at the Elcor Nursing Home, following an extended illness. He was 82. Mr. McConnell was named administrator of the Commodity Stabilization Service under Secretary of Agriculture Ezra Taft Benson in February 1954. He was later named an assistant secretary of agriculture and served in that position until December 1955. Mr. McConnell was also a former chief executive officer of the Cooperative Grange League Federation Exchange, a farm cooperative, which preceded Agway Inc. After leaving the Eisenhower Administration, Mr. McConnell served as a professor at the Cornell School of Business and Public Administration. He also operated a 600-acre farm near Mansfield. Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Elizabeth Beach McConnell of Mansfield; two daughters, Mrs. Jean T. Katims of Sea Bright, New Jersey and Mrs. Carroll Manning of Palmryra, NY; a son Joseph A. McConnell of Ithaca, NY; a sister Mrs. Sadie Fraser of Pine City, NY; two step-daughters, Mrs. Alice Setterman of Camp Hill, Pa., Mrs. Jeanette Yorko of York, Pa; 11 grandchildren; two step-grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Thursday at 1:30 pm at the Mansfield United Methodist Church with Rev. Richard Brenneman officiating. No calling hours. Those wishing may make memorial donations to the Tioga Co. Chapter of the American Cancer Society, 5 East Ave., Wellsboro. Arrangements by the Kuhl Funeral Home, Mansfield. |
