1893 Mansfield Advertiser article about Mansfield Businesses. R.E. Olney Next in our review of the business places of the town we wish to make special mention of the popular, long established and reliable jewelry business carried on by Mr. R.E. Olney. Mr. Olney has been identified with the jewelry trade of the town over a quarter of a century, and he has always had a satisfactory patronage. His business possesses the confidence and appreciation of the people for its capable management. Enjoying the advantages of long, practical experience Mr. Olney thoroughly understands the jewelry business. He is a first-class workman and any work which leaves his hands in the line of repair work may be relied upon. He is not only a first-class, practical workman but has invented and manufactures appliances and improvements by which the most difficult and intricate work can be done with the greatest accuracy. He has in use appliances and machinery manufactured by his own skill and ingenuity which are not to be found in any other jewelry establishment in this section of the state. As a consequence Mr. Olney's business is not confined to Mansfield but receives work from all over the country and especially with railroad men with which absolute accuracy is essential in time pieces, watches are sent to him from all over for repair. He purchases his stock direct from the manufacturer and imports and handles a well selected stock of find gold and silver watches, clocks of every variety, jewelry of all descriptions, spectacles, silverware. Mr. Olney is one of our substantial business men. 1897 Mansfield Advertiser R.E. Olney Is one of the reliable jewelers of this county. He has been in business in this place over thirty years, and has, it is said, more tools of his own manufacture than is carried in all the other jewelry stores in this county combines. He is the authorized examiner of all the watches on this division of the Erie road, work that came to him unsolicited. He receives orders from different places along the line, as well as from Bradford and Potter counties. His store is stocked with reliable goods, such as sterling silver spoons, gold and silver watches of almost every make, the celebrated Elgin, Waltham and Seth Thomas seventeen-jeweled watches, manufactured for his own trade and bearing his own name - all suitable Christmas presents. Remember his place of business, Sullivan street, opposite the Opera House. OLNEY, Robert E. [SRGP 86280] – Mr. Robert E. Olney was the son of Nathaniel and Mary Olney, and was born in Prattsburg, NY, Nov, 9, 1836, and died Sunday, July 8, 1900, being 63 years of age. On October 6, 1860, he was united in marriage to Mary Mason, of Covington, PA, and for nearly 40 years they were permitted to live together happy in each other’s love. He was the father of four children. Two went before him into the eternal world. Nathan, who died Jan. 6, 1881, aged 12 years, and Charlie, who died December 4, 1887, aged 21 years. Two, James Olney, of Tioga, and W.H. Olney, of this borough, survive him. He also leaves a brother and two sisters, Henry Olney, of Naples, NY, Mrs. Prudence Fowler, of Avoca, NY, and Mrs. E.M. Fellows, of this place. Since the 7th of May, 1867, he has lived in Mansfield engaged in the watch and jewelry business. He was possessed of superior mechanical skill and was able to make any screw, pivot, wheel, shaft – in fact, any part of a watch that might be brought to him for repair. For two years he was official examiner of time pieces on the Tioga branch of the Erie R.R. He was honest, upright and conscientious in all his dealings. Benevolent in disposition, the poor and needy found in him a willing helper. He was converted and united with the Baptist church in Feb. 1886, during the ministry of Rev. A.H. Hodder. He had been liberal in church finances and paid promptly what he subscribed for any purpose. His home was to him the best place on earth. Thoughtful about all that would make it delightful to his family he provided liberally that is might be so. Devoted to his home and family he developed and exhibited those qualities that made him a father, a husband, in fullest meaning. Let us believe that when he left the home of his earthly love he entered one of the mansions the Master has fitted for his followers, to await the coming of those who tarry here a little longer. The funeral was held from the Baptist church, Tuesday at 2 p.m., conducted by Rev. L.M. Gates, assisted by Rev. F.W. Reynolds, a former pastor. – Mansfield Advertiser, PA, 11 July 1900, Wednesday, p.3 |
