PENNO – George Penno, 58, [SRGP 82780] of Elmira St., died of a heart seizure while attending a dance Saturday night, April 8, 1961 at the Corning Glass Center. Mr. Penno was born in East Providence, RI, on May 13, 1902. He attended grade school and high school in Providence. He worked in the Providence Shops during World War I and spent one year in the Army in Railroad Artillery, 1919-1920. He started to work with his father with Lewis Historical Publishing Co. as collector then as salesman in 1925. He was with this company almost continuously as salesman for 29 years. He spent about a year as masseur with dance marathons thru out New England and was Waltz King for a year in New England. He rejoined Lewis Publishing Co. and was with them until World War II when he served in the Coast Guard with the Navy from Sept 1942 until sometime in 1944 when he developed a dislocated disc. He went to Denver in Feb. of 1945 for Lewis Historical Pub. Co. and bought "Cozy Cottages" motel in partnership with his sister in 1946 and operated it until August of 1947. He and his family came to Mansfield at that time. He was a past master of the Mansfield Friendship Lodge F & AM and the Royal Arch Chapter and the Williamsport Consistory and Irem Temple of Wilkes-Barre. He was a past noble grand of Mansfield Lodge, IOOF. He was also vice president of the Mansfield Chamber of Commerce, was active in the Lions Club and was a past district governor. He was influential in establishing the Tioga County Eye Bank. He was a Boy Scout Committeeman and Republican Committeeman of Mansfield. Mr. Penno came to Mansfield in 1947 from Colorado. He worked with the Rose Chevrolet Co. as a salesman until it was sold to Baldwin Chevrolet. At that time he began working with Wells and Goodall and opened the Main Appliances in 1951. Surviving are his wife, Lorena J. Penno; daughters, Jerry Ann, Helen A. and Linda Lou and sons, George C. and Peter, all at home; sister, Miss Barbara Penno of Denver, Colo. Funeral was held at the Shaw & Robena Funeral Home at 2 PM today (Wednesday). The Rev. Donald D. Cronk officiated. Burial was in Prospect Cemetery. – Mansfield Advertiser, 12 April 1961, p.1 |
