He passed away Saturday evening after a brief illness. Mr. Peterson's father died in 1905 and the family moved to Elkland, where he spent his boyhood. He graduated from Elkland High School in 1912, from Mansfield Normal in 1914 and from Ursinus College in 1917. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in World War I and was a Lieutenant in 1917, and Captain 1918-1919. On August 24, 1920, he was married to Eleanor Judge, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. T.W. Judge. To them were born two children: Mary Lee [Mrs. Robert Messinger] and Dr. H. Gerhardt Peterson, of Los Angeles, Calif. He was a partner in the T.W. Judge Co. store from 1920 until 1943, and from then on has been the owner. During his life in Mansfield he was very active in community affairs and will long be remembered for his activities. On many occasions he had the forethought to write a note of sympathy to people in affliction, and to give such aid as he could. He was a valued member of St. James Church, where he served as vestryman, secretary-treasurer for over 25 years and in 1957 as Senior Warden. He was active this year in the campaign for funds for the new church school building which has now been let for bids. He was the organizer and first commander of Austin-Cox Post, American Legion. He was elected to the Borough Council in 1936 and served for 12 years, the last two as president. He worked out plans and began the construction of macadam pavements on the side streets of Mansfield, as well as promoting other improvements. he was the organizer and first president of Corey Creek Golf Club and this has been his pet since its organization in 1927. He has been chairman of the greens committee all that time. he was one of the early champions of the club, and in 1942 and 1948 he came back to win the championship. His interest in golf led him to help organize and lay out several other clubs: Coudersport, Port Allegany, Olean, and Emporium. From 1929 to 1933 he was a trustee and secretary of the Board of Blossburg State Hospital and worked for the erection by the State of their first new permanent building. In 1932 he became administrator of the Civil Works Administration of Tioga County and was also chairman of the Emergency Relief Board. Since 1930 he has been district manager of the North Penn Gas Company. In the Mansfield Business Men's Association he instituted the Tuesday noon luncheons which were well attended for many years and much business for the community was transacted. He was president of the Alumni Association of Mansfield State Teachers College from 1934 to 1946; was chairman for six counties of the War Fund from 1942 to 1944, and has been a member of the Corporate Board of Sailors & Soldiers Memorial Hospital in Wellsboro. He was active in forming the Municipal Authority of Mansfield, which bought the Mansfield Water company in 1943, and was chairman of the Board until 1955. When the swimming pool was built he was chairman of the Finance Committee and also a member of the Armory Board when the Armory was brought to Mansfield. In World War II he was the first director of Civil Defense for Tioga County. His lodge affiliations were Friendship Lodge, No. 247, Mansfield, Coudersport Consistory. He has been a director of the First National Bank for several years. The funeral was held from St. James Church, Mansfield at 11 o'clock Monday morning with the Rev. Bruce Campbell officiating. The church was filled with people from all parts of this section who came to pay their respects. Besides his widow and children as mentioned above, he is survived by a sister, Mrs. J.H. Johnson, of Richmond, Utah; a step brother, Harold Nelson, of Conifer, NY; and nine grandchildren. Pall bearers were members of the church and his close associates in its work as follows: Charles Curtis, Senior Warden; William Bailey, Edward Russell, Junior Warden; John Marvin; E.V. McConnell.
