RETAN, Edmund A. [SRGP 86161] - Edmund A. Retan, 83, of Mansfield, retired educator, died Feb. 18 [1948] in the Blossburg State Hospital. A native of Wells township, Bradford county, Mr. Retan was the son of Austin and Lucretia Warner Retan. He taught school in Jackson township, Morris Run, Tioga and in Michigan before coming to Mansfield as principal of the high school there. For six years, Mr. Retan served as superintendent of Tioga County Schools. Before his retirement in 1926, the educator was director of the campus schools of Mansfield State Teachers College, the position now held by his son, Dr. George A. Retan. The deceased was a member and past master of the Friendship Lodge, F&AM, and of the Coudersport Consistory. Surviving in addition to his son are one daughter, Mrs. Lida Cobb, also of Mansfield; two grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Services were held Friday afternoon at the funeral home, 18 North Main street, with burial in Prospect cemetery. Officiating was the Rev. David Griffiths, Baptist pastor, and the Rev. Floyd Guiles, Methodist pastor. The Masonic Lodge conducted burial services. - Wellsboro Gazette, February 26, 1948, p.12 |
