ROSE, R. Watson - R. Watson Rose, former Mansfield business man, passed away quietly, in his sleep at the home of his son, Roy Rose, in Glendale, Calif., March 22, 1950. He was taking a morning nap on the couch, from which he did not awaken. He had recently been informed by officers of Friendship Lodge, F&AM, that they were honoring the 50th anniversary of his membership in that order. The lodge presented him with a gold button, as he was the oldest member of this lodge. They received a fine letter written by him on his 92nd birthday in reply. R. Watson Rose was the son of Russell B. and Jane Morgan Rose, and was born in Sullivan on March 14, 1858. He was married to Hattie Miller, daughter of Darwin Miller, on March 1, 1881. They went to Minnesota for two years. Returning to Mainesburg, he and his brother, Mort F. Rose, built and conducted a grocery and general store in Mainesburg in 1883. He sold his interest to W. Pembroke Rose, who later sold it to Joseph N. Strange. R.W. Rose came to Mansfield and entered into partnership with J. Miller Clark and Tom W. Judge. In 1896 M.F. Rose sold his interest in the Mainesburg store to Jos. N. Strange and bought the interest of J. Miller Clark, who went to the Harford Soldiers Orphan School as superintendent. Tom Judge went into business with D.H. Pitts and the Rose Bros. continued the business in the store now owned by H.T. Witmore. In the Fall of 1896 they bought the brick store, corner of Main and Center Streets, now owned by Preston's, Inc., of G.N. Welch. They continued in this location until 1929. About 1904 or 1905 R.W. Rose moved to Colorado to go into the cattle business with J. Fremont Rose, Mortimer F. Rose, W.D. Rose and Morgan E. Rose. They formed the Rose Land and Cattle Company and had a large ranch about 25 miles of Fountain, Colorado. Mrs. R.W. Rose passed away Sept. 26, 1945, in Pueblo, Colo., where she was buried. R.W. Rose went to Glendale, Calif., to live with his second son, Roy W. Rose, spending part of the time in California, and part in Pueblo, with his oldest son, Charles M. Rose, and his youngest, Russell B. Rose. Mr. Rose was buried in Pueblo, with his wife. Besides the three sons and other relatives he leaves four grandchildren. - Mansfield Advertiser, 29 March 1950, p.1, col.1 |
