ROSE - Warren D. Rose [SRGP 06183], prominent Mansfield and Tioga County citizen for many years, passed away at his home in Mansfield last Friday evening, following a short illness. A Prayer service was held at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Nelson J. Smith, Sunday afternoon at two o'clock, followed by the funeral services at the First Baptist Church at 2:30, Rev. D.J. Griffiths officiating. Interment was in the State Road Cemetery, with representatives of Friendship Lodge, F&AM, conducting the committal. Warren D. Rose was born in Sullivan Township Feb. 2, 1850, the second son of Elliott S. and Laura Morgan Rose. Other children of this family were: William Pembrooke Rose; Anna, who married W.D. Gray; and Morgan E. Rose. He spent his boyhood on the family farm, attended the Sullivan schools, and later Mansfield State Normal. He taught school for six years in Sullivan township, and began buying and shipping live stock when 19 years old. Later he joined his brother, William Pembrooke Rose, in dealing in all kinds of farm produce. His activities led him to establish himself in the business in Mansfield as a shipper of hay, grain, wool, livestock and farm produce. The name of W.D. Rose in this business was a familiar one throughout the northern tier. He was interested in the Tioga County Creamery Company which owned several creameries in this section and produced a high score butter. About the turning of the century he established the Mansfield Dairy Company and built the milk shipping plant, known as the Mansfield Condensery, which was later bought by the Dairymen's League and is now operated by them. With changing business conditions he established and directed several organizations dealing with the products of the farmers of this vicinity. In his business career he was noted for being a square dealer and a good loser. Hundreds of farmers in this section have only a good word to say for W.D. Rose and his dealings with them. Mr. Rose possessed a very retentive memory, not using contracts in his business dealing, but could remember an agreement to the last detail, even though not consummated for a year. He considered his word his bond. He was a very good judge of stock and would often pay the farmers more for their stock than they asked. In his home life he was a most devoted husband and indulgent father. His friendly disposition and cheerful laugh will remain in the memories of all his friends. On October 22, 1872, he was married to Alice Gray, only daughter of Lafayette Gray, of Gray's Valley, Sullivan township. Four children were born to them: Edith, wife of Nelson J. Smith of Mansfield; Fred E. Rose, of New York City; Warren Gray Rose, of New York City; Warren G. Rose, who died several years ago, and Harold M. Rose, of Williamsport. He was a member of the State Road Baptist Church and served as trustee for several years. He was one of the organizers and a director of the First National Bank, of Mansfield, and occupied other positions in other activities in the community. Besides his children above mentioned, he is survived by his widow; his sister, Mrs. W.D. Gray; three grandchildren: Warren M. Rose, Detroit, Michigan; Leone J. Rose and Morgan Rose, of Mansfield; and several nieces and nephews. The honorary pall bearers at his funeral were: George L. Strait, E.A. Retan, R.E. Cleveland, E.B. Dorsett, A.H. Vosburg, John E. Farrer. The active pall bearers were: Homer Hager, Frank Marvin, Charles R. Miller, Charles McDowell, Percy A. Coles, Charles L. Johnson. - Gray scrapbook; written on obit Dec. 30, 1938 - - Mansfield Advertiser, PA, 4 January 1939, Wednesday, p.1 Warren D. Rose, of Mansfield. The funeral was held Sunday at 2:30 p.m. in the Baptist Church. The Rev. David J. Griffiths officiated. Burial I the Sullivan State Road Cemetery. Committal services were conducted by Friendship Lodge, F&AM. Mr. rose was born in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pa., Feb. 2, 1849, the son of Elliott and Laura Ann Morgan Rose, who were among the early settlers of Sullivan Township. He spent his early life in Sullivan Township, during which time he taught several terms of school. Mr. Rose was one of the pioneer dealers in farm produce in Tioga County and for many years was one of the largest shippers of hay, straw and livestock in Tioga County. He was one of the organizers of a cooperative dairy company that built the milk plant now operated by the Dairymen’s League Cooperative Association. Mr. Rose was a former president of the First National Bank and trustee of the Mansfield State Normal School, also a member of the Baptist Church and Friendship Lodge, F&AM. Smith of Mansfield; two sons, Fred Rose of New York and Harold of Williamsport; three grandchildren, Warren Rose of Toledo, O., Morgan Rose and Miss Leone Rose of Mansfield, and a sister, Mrs. Anna Gray of Sullivan Township.
