SIMMONS, Frank W. [SRGP 86432] - Mansfield lost one of her best-loved and most highly esteemed citizens last Friday night in the death of Frank W. Simmons. It was a distinct shock as he was ill only a few hours. Frank W. Simmons was born in Oswego, NY, March 6, 1864, the son of William and Annie Boardman Simmons. Soon after his birth the family moved to Westfield, PA, where his boyhood was spent. He came to Mansfield to attend the Normal School and graduated with the class of 1882. For some time he served in various capacities with the U.S. Leather Company, being located in Salamanca, NY, Chattanooga, Tenn., Buenos Ayres, S.A., and Sheffield and Williamsport, PA. Previous to his retirement from business twenty years ago he had been president of the Pennsylvania Lumber Company. He was twice married; first to Miss Fanny W. Seidler, who passed away December 28, 1908. Two children were born to this union, Elizabeth, who died in infancy, and Dorothy, who survives him. January 2, 1911, he was married to Miss Stella Lownsbery, of Mansfield, and they came to Mansfield in 1915, buying the Allen property opposite the college campus, where they have since made their home. Three children were born to this union, two who died in infancy and Frank, who died at the age of 20. In Mansfield Mr. Simmons was active in Masonic Circles, being a member of Friendship Lodge, F&AM, Zebulum Royal Arch Chapter and Tyagaghton Commandery and also the Coudersport Consistory. He was a faithful attendant of the Baptist Church. He was one of the first members of the Corey Creek Golf Club and played a great deal until his health compelled him to quit. He gave unostentatiously to various charities. Kind, sympathetic, scrupulously fair, and of a jovial nature, he was held in high esteem by all who knew him. He enjoyed life and he helped others to enjoy it. Besides his widow and daughter, Dorothy, of Staten Island, NY, he is survived by a brother, Arthur Simmons, of St. Petersburg, Florida, and several nieces and nephews. Another brother, Rev. F.P. Simmons, died a few years ago. The funeral was held from his late home Monday at 2 p.m., the Rev. David J. Griffiths officiating. Burial was in Prospect Cemetery with Masonic honors. The pall bearers were Fred Ely, E.A. Retan, R.E. Cleveland, L.B. Shaw, George Cass and W.A. Bates. - Mansfield Advertiser, 28 August 1935, p.1, col. 6 |
