SPENCER Alonzo M. [SRGP 52754] Wellsboro Agitator, Tioga, PA - Wed., October 12, 1898, Pg 3 Last Monday [10/10/1898] morning at 2 o'clock, Mr. Alonzo M. Spencer died at his home at Canoe Camp at the age of nearly 80 years. He had been in failing health for several years. Mr. Spencer was one of the leading and most active business men in that part of the county for many years. His grandfather, Amos Spencer, was the first settler at Canoe Camp, locating there in 1806 and afterward building a gristmill and a saw mill there. These mills, replaced by larger and more modern ones, were owned and operated successfully by Mr. Alonzo M. Spencer during the best part of his life. The mills are still being operated, his son having the active management of the business. Mr. Spencer was actively interested in and was for a long period an official of the Mansfield Normal School. He was an intelligent citizen, a man of conservative business methods, of sound judgment and the purest character. Mr. Spencer was elected County Treasurer in 1864 and served one term. The funeral is to be held at his late residence this afternoon. |
