STRAIT, George Bennett [SRGP 62948] - George Bennett Strait, well known in this section as an educator, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Eli Williams of Troy, Saturday night, Dec. 9, 1944, after a shot illness. About a year ago he gave up his home in Sylvania Township and went to live with his daughter, the former Julia Strait. He had been active until shortly before his death, having visited friends in Mansfield a short time ago. He was born in Tioga, Jan. 27, 1865, the son of Cole and Harriett Strait. Shortly after the family moved to Sylvania. He was graduated from Troy High School in 1884 and from Mansfield Normal in 1887. He taught in various rural schools and high schools. During the nineties he was principal of Mansfield Graded School. He was graduated from Syracuse University in 1903. He was married to Bertha Sucese, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. J.P. Sucese, of Troy. She passed away at Troy about 1911. Two children were born to them, both of whom survive: Mrs. Eli Williams, of Troy, and Bennett Strait of Delaware Water Gap. He also had one grandchild, Bertha Ann Williams, of Troy. Beginning his teaching career at the age of 16, he had a wide and varied experience, which was topped off by his teaching a rural school in Union Township last Fall until they were able to find a teacher. He taught at Cazenovia Seminary for several years, and came to Mansfield again in 1912 to teach in the Normal, which later became the Teachers College. He taught biology and mathematics, and was also dean of men when he retired in 1934. He eared his Master's Degree at the University of Michigan in 1921. He was known to the people of Mansfield, and to hundreds of M.S.T.C. Alumni, as "Daddy" Strait, a name acquired from hearing his children call him. This indicated the esteem with which he was held by so many of the students that he taught and so many of the other people with whom he came in contact. In Mansfield he was an active member of the Methodist Church, where he taught a Bible class for many years that attracted a large following. He was also active in Masonic circles, being a member of Friendship Lodge, of Mansfield. The funeral was held this [Wednesday] afternoon at two o'clock from the Shaw Funeral Home, the Rev. Floyd Guiles officiating. Interment was in Oakhill Cemetery, Troy. - Mansfield Advertiser, PA, 13 December 1944, p.1 STRAIT, George B. [SRGP 62948] SUCCESE, C. Bertha [SRGP 62951] Strait-Succese Wedding A quiet wedding took place in our town today, Dec. 24th, says the Troy Gazette, of a great deal of interest to a wide circle of friends and acquaintances. The parties joined in the indissoluble bonds were Prof. Geo. B. Strait, principal of the Mansfield Graded School, a young man of fine person, pleasant address and the highest character, whose friends are as numerous as his acquaintances. He is a successful teacher, having been principal of Elkland School, is a graduate of both the Troy High School and the Mansfield State Normal School. The bride, Miss C. Bertha Succese, is one of the best known and admired young ladies of Troy, a member of the M.E. choir and an artist and teacher, whose success has been phenomenal. There are dozens of persons whose skill with the brush or pencil is a delight to themselves and their friends, who owe it to the intelligent skill and taste of Mrs. Strait. She has been an indefatigable worker in all departments of church and social work, and as superintendent of the art department of our fairs, has made them an unexpected success. She will be much missed here, and the hearty wishes of all our people will follow the steps of this couple, so happily started on the journey of life together. A trip to the metropolis will be the preliminary to their settlement in Mansfield. - Mansfield Advertiser, 30 December 1891e George and Clara lived in Mansfield. He was a teacher and member of the Official Board M. E. Church, a graduate of Syracuse University. |
