STRAIT - Harold G. Strait, 85, of 60 North Main St., Mansfield, died Thursday, Dec. 15, 1983, at Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Hospital, Wellsboro. Mr. Strait was former owner of Strait’s Hardware at Mansfield, a family operated business since 1891, retiring in 1971. Born at Mansfield Aug. 12, 1898, he was a son of George L. and Anna Westbrook Strait. He was a member and former moderator of First Baptist Church in Mansfield. A graduate of Mansfield High School, he was graduated in 1917 from Mansfield Normal School, a forerunner of Mansfield University. He had been president of the Tioga County Chapter of the Appalachian Thruway Association and was treasurer of the state association. He was a former director of the Route 14 Highway Association. In 1941 he set up the Tioga County draft board and served as its clerk until 1946. An Army veteran of World War I, he was a charter member of Austin Cox American Legion Post 478 at Mansfield. He was a past commander of that post and for the 16th District of Pennsylvania. Mr. Strait was a member of Friendship Lodge 247 F&AM, which he had served as worshipful master in 1924 and its secretary for 21 years. He was a 33rd-degree Mason since 1952 and was a deputy grand master for 10 years with the 17th Masonic District. He was a member of Zebulon Royal Arch Chapter 296 and Baldwin II Commandery 22, Knights Templar, Williamsport; the Red Cross of Constantine and the Royal Order of Scotland and a member of Williamsport Consistory. Mr. Strait was a life member of Irem Temple, Wilkes Barre, and a member of the Williamsport and Tioga County Shrine Clubs. He also was a life member of Mansfield Hose Co. and a member of the Tioga County Historical Society. In addition, he was a member of the Mansfield Kiwanis Club with a perfect attendance for 12 years, and was awarded a 50 year certificate of service from the Mansfield Chamber of Commerce in 1972. Besides his wife, Mrs. Marguerite C. Strait, he is survived by a nephew, Theodore Williams of Middletown, NJ; two nieces, Mrs. Ann Cordes of Sandpoint, Idaho, and Mrs. Winifred Jeanings of Hermitage, Tennessee. The funeral was held on Monday at the church on Main Street. Burial was in Oakwood Cemetery at Mansfield. The Rev. Benjamin E. Nevin, his pastor, officiated. Arrangements by the Scureman Funeral Home.
