SWINSICK, Robert E. - Dr. Robert E. Swinsick, 85, of Mansfield, passed away peacefully on Monday, August 23, 2021, at home with his wife by his side. On September 15, 1979, he married the love of his life, Helen C. (Cherniak) Swinsick, sharing nearly 43 years of marriage together. Born November 9, 1935, in Morris Run, he was a son of the late Edmund and Phyllis (Owens) Swinsick. Outside of the love Bob had for his wife and family, his greatest passion and life's work was education and improving the education system overall, serving as a Professor, Dean of Students, Principal, Chairman and Chief Negotiator for Pennsylvania's 14 state-owned colleges and universities. He graduated from Mansfield High School in 1953 and attended the Mansfield State Teachers College from 1953-1957, obtaining his B.S. in Education. Bob continued his education from 1957-1960 and earned his M.S. in Education at St. Bonaventure University, finally obtaining his Doctorate in Education from the Pennsylvania State University in 1968. Bob began his teaching career at Port Allegany High School in 1957, and shortly after, accepted a position as an Assistant Principal at Shippensburg High School in 1962, where he remained for the next six years, two of which as Principal of the school. He then committed nearly 40 more years to higher education at the former Mansfield State College and current Mansfield University, in a multitude of capacities prior to his retirement. Bob also served as President of the Mansfield Borough council for 28 years and President of the Board of Directors for both Broad Acres Nursing Home and Corey Creek Golf Course for several more years. He was considered a respected man of action, not words, overseeing many projects, effectively balancing budgets and improving the minds and communities in which he resided. Bob enjoyed his leisure time as well, often creating beautiful pieces of woodwork, shooting a round of golf, or simply entertaining family and friends. He also enjoyed many types of gambling and trips to the casino with his wife. Bob was a devout Catholic; a member of the Holy Child Parish in Mansfield where he and his wife sang in the choir for 43 years. He was often praised and remembered for his beautiful voice ringing out the melodies of "The Lord's Prayer," "The Litany of Saints," and "O Holy Night" in church. He was a jack of all trades, who held his beloved wife and family above all else. Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife, Helen C. Swinsick, of Mansfield; daughters and sons-in-law, Jacqueline and John Coco, of Pittsburgh and Jenny and Bernie Uzelac, of Mesa, Ariz.; son and daughter-in-law, Scott and Sara Swinsick, of Mesa, Ariz.; six grandchildren; sister and brother-in-law, Kathy and Bill McCord, of Hudson, Ohio; one niece and one nephew; one great-nephew and many dear friends. In addition to his parents, Bob was preceded in death by his brother, Richard Swinsick. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the Dr. Robert E. Swinsick Educational Scholarship Fund, Northwest Bank, 50 S. Main St. Mansfield, PA 16933. Bob's Mass of Christian Burial was held on Friday, August 27, 2021 at Holy Child Catholic Church, 242 S. Main St. Mansfield, with the Rev. Bryan Wright presiding. Burial will took place in Oakwood Cemetery, Mansfield. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Wilston Funeral Home, Mansfield, PA. - Mansfield Gazette, PA, 26 August 2021 |
