PROMINENT MANSFIELD MAN DIES-Karl F. Van Norman, 70 passed away at his home on College Avenue on November 29,1956, following an extended illness. Mr. Van Norman was the son of the late Cora and Harvey J. Van Norman and was born in Lawrenceville. His father had the record of teaching the longest number of years of any professor at the Normal School, 26 years. Mr. Van Norman was librarian of the Mansfield Free Public Library for 28 years having resigned last February, because of his health. He was associated with the theatre business in Mansfield for 53 years. He began as an usher in the old Mansfield Opera House in 1903 and later was featured pianist at the Theatorium which started in a barn in the rear of what is now Ella Mae's Beauty Shop, and was called the Star Theatre. He later owned the Star Theatre and the forerunner to the present Twain. He was a graduate of Mansfield State Normal School, class of 1906. He was a noted quarterback at the college in the early days of that sport and throughout his life had displayed exceptional interest and knowledge of football in Mansfield. He became graduate manager of the Athletic Association of Mansfield State Teachers College and was active in this capacity for many years. He was a member of the St. James Episcopal Church and of the Sons of the American Revolution. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Marian Greener Van Norman, formerly of Elmira, granddaughter of one of Elmira's pioneer business men, Jacob Greener; three daughters, Mrs. Charles F. Jerabek, Aurora, Ill., Mrs. Peter Paul Rice, Washington, D.C.; and Mrs. R. Kelts Dillman of Wellsboro and seven grandchildren. Funeral services were held at the family home Monday at 2:00 p.m. The Rev. J. Daniel Stover officiated and burial was in Prospect Cemetery. |
