WHITTAKER, Glen Age 96, of Blossburg, PA, died Wednesday, February 28, 2007; he was born November 13, 1910, the son of Vincent and Mae Whittaker of Richmond Twp., Tioga Co. After graduation from Mansfield High School, he graduated from Mansfield State Teachers College and later Bucknell University. He was a member of the following organizations; The Covington Church of Christ, Friendship Lodge No. 247, F&AM Arbon Lodge No. 489 IOOF, American Legion Post No. 0572, Kiwanis Club of Blossburg, Hillside Rod and Gun Club of Blossburg, Tioga County Sports Hall of Fame. In the fall of 1933, he was hired as an instructor in the Putnam-Covington Joint School system, two years later he became principal. He taught, coached sports, and handled duties of a principal. In June 1935, he married Mildred Rice; they had one daughter, Nancy. He was drafted into the service of the U.S. Army during WWII on June 1943, he obtained the rank of sergeant and was discharged in November 1945. He resumed his school duties, January 1946. In 1957, he became the principal of both the Covington and Blossburg Elementary Schools. In 1964, he lost his wife after a battle with cancer. In 1966, he married Kathryn Rose. He continued his work with the two schools until his retirement in 1970. After his retirement, he and Donald Cleveland continued to operate the Rice Trucking Co. until 1980. Glen enjoyed mostly brook trout fishing in the hills of Pennsylvania where he taught his grandson, Sean, to fish. Glen is survived by his wife, Kathryn; daughter, Nancy Holley, Elmira, NY; grandson, Sean Holley and his wife, Patti, Horseheads, NY; great-granddaughter, Katelyn Holley, Horseheads, NY; granddaughter, Colleen Valicenti, Elmira, NY; great-grandson, Matthew Valicenti; and great-granddaughter, Victoria Valicenti, Elmira, NY. Friends will be received at the Freeberg Funeral Home, Blossburg, Friday, March 2nd. From 5 p.m. until 8 p.m., the F&AM Arbon Lodge No. 489 IOOF will hold a Masonic service at 7:30 p.m. Friends may also call Saturday, March 3rd, at the Covington Church of Christ at 10 a.m. until 11 a.m., funeral services will follow at 11 a.m. with Pastor Ira Hindman officiating. Full Military Honors will be accorded by Theodore Roosevelt American Legion Post #167, Morris Run; William B. Wilson American Legion Post #572, Blossburg; and Veterans of Foreign Wars Supreme Sacrifice Post #8730, Blossburg. Interment will be at Oakwood Cemetery, Mansfield. |
