1896 21 OCT D Wilhelm, John Wann (SRGP 86805) John Wann Wilhelm d. Mansfield Oct 14th, stroke, b. Centre Co., Pa. Aug 7th 1830, so 66, m. Oct 26th 1852 Miss Cordelia F. Knight of Sullivan twp., 6 children, she d. Elmira, Ny. Jan 13th 1887 (4 children also gone) m. 2nd Oct 20th 1889 Miss Sophia Manners of Elmira, 2 children left; Mrs. Earl White, Galeton; and W. F. of Williamsport. WILHELM, John Wann [SRGP 86805] - On Wednesday morning, October 14, 1896, at 8:15 the spirit of John Wann Wilhelm passed from its earthly home of clay to life eternal. The deceased suffered a slight stroke of paralysis on September 9th, but it did not confine him to his bed. The following week another stroke rendered his right side helpless. From that time until September 28 he improved quite fast and regained some use of his right side, but another stroke left him utterly helpless and speechless and he failed continually until his death. He was born in Centre county, PA, August 7, 1830, and was 66 years old at the time of his death. The funeral was held the following Friday at 1:30 at the home and 2 o'clock at the First M.E. Church. A large number attended the obsequies. The services were conducted by the Rev. E.J. Rosengrant, Methodist, and the Rev. Mr. McFetrich, Episcopalian. The text was, "Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God." Immediately after the sermon the remains were taken to Hope Cemetery and there consigned to the grave. The pall bearers were Messrs. Sperry, Spencer, Clark, VanOsten, Gaige and Cummings. He leaves a wife and two children, Mrs. Earl White, of Galeton, PA, and Mr. W.F. Wilhelm, of Williamsport, PA. He was married twice, and was preceded to the home beyond by his first wife and four children, Charles, Lillian, Freddie and Frank. He married his first wife, Miss Cordelia F. Knight, of Sullivan, Tioga County, PA, October 26, 1852, and six children were born to them. She died in Elmira, NY, January 13, 1887. On October 20, 1889, he married his second wife, Miss Sophia Manners, in Elmira, NY, by whom he is survived. He was a resident of Tioga County almost continuously for thirty years, coming here in 1866 and engaging in the mercantile business and afterward conducted the old Fuller and Brundage hotels. He was well-known all over the county. He removed to Elmira, NY, in 1886, and for four years conducted a flour and feed business, returning to Mansfield in 1889. The deceased had many good qualities, and was a men among men. For him there are no more ambitious hopes, no more sturdy plans, life's work has rounded into the evening that shortens labor. How weak and insignificant seems the story of life's goodness and profit when death begins to slant his shadow upon our souls. How infinite in the comparison seems that eternal goodness which is crowned with mercy. "The soul of origin divine. God's glorious image, freed from clay. In heaven's eternal sphere shall shine A star of day! The sun is but a spark of fire. A transient meteor in the sky. The soul immortal as its sire, Shall never die." - Mansfield Advertiser, PA, 21 October 1896, Wednesday, p.3 |
