MRS. CHARLOTTE S. SMITH Mrs. Charlotte Shepard Smith, 93, Mainesburg RD 1, died November 7, 1957. She was the widow of Rev. Freddus I. Smith. She was a member of the Elk Run Methodist Church, the WSCS of that church and of the East Sullivan Grange. Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Paulena Avery, Mainesburg, RD 1; sons, Glenn I. Smith, Myrtle Beach, NC and Paul Charles Smith, Woodbridge, NJ; sister, Mrs. Nana Ayres, Millerton RD 2; 3 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren. The funeral was held Sunday at 2 pm at the Shaw and Robena Funeral Home with Rev. Donald Roe officiating. Burial was in the Elk Run Cemetery, Chandlersburg. Freddus and Lottie probably met because Lottie's uncle Foster Garrision lived just the other side of Tears Corners from the Smiths. The house, in fact, would have been in sight from the Smith place. She probably visited Foster's family occasionally and became aquainted with Freddus. Mansfield Advertiser 6th Jan 1886- Freddus I. Smith of Elk Run and Miss Lottie Shepard of Mansfield married at her home, Jan 2nd by Rev. W. Hermans. Mansfield Advertiser, PA, 13 November 1957, Wednesday, p.7 Paulina says her mother was born in Jackson Township, but it may have been Rutland near the line. She also told us that after Freddus' death, Lottie was 'courted by' a bishop from Elmira. She loved her home at the top of Elk Run hill so very much that she could not even consider remarrying and leaving. 1920 census -h071 Dairy Farmer 1940 census - Farmer on a farm |
