Mansfield Advertiser, 12 January 1938, p.1, col.1 & 2 Bids Asked for New Building Program at College Advertisements for bids for the new building program at the College are published in this issue of the Advertiser. It is expected that bids will be accepted and work started by Feb. 1st. The plans include, besides the water system now under construction, and improvements to the heating plant, three new buildings, as follows: Gymnasium Building – This will be located east of Straughn Hall, about where the Home Economics Cottage now is, and will be two stories high, 172x130 feet. The foundations and floors will be of concrete, except the gymnasium floor, which will be of maple. The main gymnasium floor with bleachers will measure 108x90 feet. The swimming pool will be tile, 80x75 feet. Home Economics and Music Building – This will be a V-shaped structure with two wings extending on Sullivan and Academy streets opposite the Methodist Church. It will be 61 feet wide with outside wall dimensions of 298 feet. The administration section and lobby will be at the outside point of the V, and a small auditorium at the inside point. This will be one-story high, with turrets to improve the sky-line, and with brick outside backed up by hollow tile. The floors will be mostly concrete. Training School Building – This will be a two-story building just east of the present Training School which will become the Science laboratory after certain alterations. The main section will be 35x140 feet and will have two wings, each 30x40 feet. It will contain an assembly room and classrooms, being built of brick outside backed by hollow tile and trimmed with limestone. The whole cost of these three buildings alone will be about $460,000. |
