Served 5 Aug 1917 - 31 March 1920 Served Overseas 12 Dec 1917 - 20 Aug 1918 BAILEY, Benjamin Mart, Col. [SRGP 31458] - Col. B. Mort Bailey, formerly of Mansfield, passed away at his home in Atlanta, GA, Sunday evening. He had been ill for several months. Mort Bailey was born in Mansfield July 2, 1880, the son of Benjamin C. and Ida Talbot Bailey. He attended Mansfield schools and graduated from Mansfield Normal in the class of 1899. He was quite interested in military matters and made them his life study. He taught at St. John's Military Academy for several years. In the U.S. Army he served at various posts in this country, and in the first World War was with the 15th Field Artillery in France. Later he was National Guard instructor in the South, and was colonel of a regiment that was part of the first mechanized forces in this country. Illness kept him from this war, but his son, Benjamin Mort Bailey, 3rd, was Lt. Col.. with our forces in the invasion of Italy and was killed in France last August. Col. Bailey is survived by his wife, and his step father, Elton Bailey, of Elkland, and several other relatives in this section. - Mansfield Advertiser, April 18, 1945, p.1 |
