Notes |
CLARK- Frank A. Clark, one of Mansfield’s best-known businessmen, died unexpectedly at his home at 2 o’clock Saturday morning. Death was caused by heart disease. Mr. Clark was the owner of the Mansfield Steam Laundry, which he rebuilt in 1911, after a fire in which he nearly lost his life. Born at the Clark homestead near Mansfield, Sept. 26, 1862, the son of P.M. and Adaline Clark, he attended the Mansfield schools and later became superintendent of the boys’ department of the Soldiers’ Orphan Home when that institution was in Mansfield. Subsequently he became a railroad man and was a fireman on the Erie Railroad out of Hornell. In 1909 he returned to Mansfield after being in business in New York. In 1884 he married Ida Winfield, of Big Flats, NY. Of five children born to them two survive, Mrs. Maxwell Baxter, of Waverly, and May Clark, a teacher in the schools of New Hyde Park, NJ. Mrs. Clark died in 1894. In 1916 Mr. Clark married Minnie Cogswell, who with the two children, survives him. The decedent was prominent in the affairs of Mansfield. He formerly was Burgess of that borough, a member of the school board, a member of the Masons and prominent in the Methodist church. At the time of his death he was a trustee of the Gray Brass Company, of Mansfield. The funeral was held Monday afternoon, the services being in charge of the Masons. – Wellsboro Agitator, August 20, 1924, p2 Mansfield Advertiser, 10 May 1899, p.3, col.4 [7/20] There is general rejoicing among his host of friends over the return to Mansfield to reside of Mr. Frank A. Clark, formerly of this boro, but for a number of years of New York City. Mr. Clark has purchased the laundry business of Wilson & Ramsdell and took possession on Monday. His life-long practice of doing all things well and his large business experience and intimate knowledge of the ways of the big metropolis, insure the fullest measure of success in his present undertaking. That this local enterprise will grow and flourish under Mr. Clark's direction goes without saying. The retiring proprietors have not made known their plans for the future. Obituary found in Marietta COOLEY Strange scrapbook. Frank held the office of Burgess of Mansfield in 1909 for a four year term. 1910 census - Frank was proprietor of a laundry. Harold was foreman in a lumber yard. Frank listed as widowed, all the children were single. 1920 census - Frank was proprietor of laundry. Eda [Ida] was high school teacher, and Janice was in school. |
