Served 28 May 1918 - 16 Apr 1919 Battery C 16 Battalion Field Artillery Company D 408 Reserve Labor Battalion CLEVELAND, Alfred James [SRGP 73870] - Alfred James Cleveland, 62, Mansfield, died August 1 [1957], following an extended illness. Mr. Cleveland had been one of Mansfield's most civic minded citizens. He was very influential in promoting, building and running the Memorial Swimming Pool, active in all school and community affairs. He was a retired farmer. He was a veteran of World War I, a member of the American Legion Post 478 and Past Commander [1941], a member of the Lions Club and of Corey Creek Golf Club. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Zula Cleveland at home; daughters, Mrs. Lucille Rhodes, Elmira; Mrs. Mary Bixby, RD 1 Mansfield; sons, Donald Wilford, Mansfield and Lt. Stuart Cleveland of Knob Noster, MO; sisters, Mrs. John Uhl, Elmira, and Mrs. Gertrude Miller, Carteret, NJ; brothers, Roy, Mansfield and Ernest, Elmira, NY; ten grandchildren. Funeral service was held Sunday at 2:30 p.m. at the Shaw & Robena Funeral Home, the Rev. David J. Griffiths, officiating. Burial was in Oakwood Cemetery. - Mansfield Advertiser, 7 August 1957, p.4 |
