Bates passed away at her home on North Main Street on Saturday evening last at 6 o’clock. She was born in Ashfield, Mass., on March 30, 1836, and had resided in Mansfield since 1873. Her husband, William A. Bates, who died 27 years ago, was an uncle of the late Prof. F.A. Allen, and for several years was superintendent of the Allen farm in Mansfield. Mrs. Bates was a charter member of the Mansfield Presbyterian church, and was affiliated with the Ladies’ Aid and Woman’s Missionary Societies of that church. She was not merely a church member, bur a Christian – one who carried her religious teachings into her everyday life, doing good whenever and wherever she could. In the home the light of her goodness shone brightest. And her children rise up and call her blessed. She was esteemed highly by all, and her fine character and its beneficent influences will be missed by the people of this community. Mrs. Bates’ survivors are one daughter, Mary E. Gould, of Mansfield; three sons, Newton K. Lincoln, of Plainfield, Mass., and John P. and Albert W. Bates, of Mansfield; two sisters, residents of Northampton, Mass., and one sister and one brother in Clinton, NY. The funeral, which was largely attended, was held from the home on Tuesday afternoon at 2 o’clock, the Rev. A. W. Fenton, pastor of the First M.E. Church of Mansfield, officiating. Burial was in the family plot in Prospect cemetery. – Mansfield Advertiser, 12 January 1910 Name:Elizabeth Almira Bates [Elizabeth Almira Howks] Gender:Female Race:White Age:72 Birth Date:30 Mar 1837 Birth Place:Ashfield, Mass Death Date:8 Jan 1910 Death Place:Mansfield, Tioga, Pennsylvania, USA Father: W S Howks Mother: Elizabeth Almira Smith Certificate Number:3922 |
