SWAN - Dr. Charles Joseph Swan, [SRGP 88968] a native of Mansfield, where he resided for many years, died at his home in Evanston, Ill., Aug. 6 [1941], after a long illness. He was 77 years old. His sister, Mrs. Mary Swan Thompson, died a few weeks ago. He was the son of Charles F. and Catherine Morris Swan. His mother was a descendant of the Morris family that was so closely associated with the beginning and growth of Mansfield. Her father was Dr. Joseph P. Morris, son of Isaac W. & Sarah Paschall Morris, and who purchased 1,100 acres of land in what is now Mansfield from James R. Wilson. This was formerly the Asa Mann property, and included most of the land in Mansfield. He laid out the land in town lots, giving six acres to the Mansfield Classical Seminary, which is now Mansfield State Teachers College, and also built the family home, called "The Wren's Nest." Joseph Swan was graduated from Mansfield Normal School in 1885 and went to Philadelphia to study medicine, where he was graduated from Hahnemann Medical College and later from Northwestern University Medical School. He began practice in Chicago in 1892 as a specialist in the diseases of the eye, ear, nose and throat, and was for a time eye and ear surgeon in the Evanston Hospital. He was a fellow of the American College of Surgeons, the American Medical Association, Illinois State Medical Society, and several other societies connected with his work. He was also a member of the Evanston Club and the University Club of Evanston. He was born in Mansfield, Sept. 25, 1864, and married Elizabeth Washburn in 1894. She died in 1934. He leaves two nephews, Lt. Col. John B. Thompson, with the U.S. Army at Pine Camp, NY, and Casper Morris Thompson, of Mansfield. - Wellsboro Agitator, August 20, 1941 |
